Rendering speed & electricity
The example speed is the same for every Mac until you enter a benchmark. Apple’s maximum-load tests are power references, not measurements of Kynd rendering. Electricity covers the selected sharing hours. MacBook idle references include the built-in display; active power is an estimate. Sharing assumes mains power and an awake Mac; extra battery charging and external displays are excluded.

Our ambition is to put more of the value of the AI boom into the hands of those people. When another Kynd user rents your Mac’s spare power, a share of that spending reaches you. That is a different kind of AI community to build.
The IEA’s 2025 base-case projection put data-centre electricity demand at around 945 TWh by 2030, more than twice its 2024 level. Reusing existing Macs is our starting point; it is not a claim of zero emissions or proven lower energy use per render. The job, machine and electricity supply all matter. Read the IEA research.

Can I earn money with any M-series Mac?
A supported Apple Silicon Mac can join Kynd Share, but the jobs it can accept depend on memory, installed models and measured performance. The app requires at least 16 GB memory. More expensive hardware is not a guarantee of higher monthly income: actual output speed and available paid work matter.
Is Kynd Share free to join?
Yes. There is no hosting subscription or required Kynd Pro licence to share your Mac. Hosts cover their electricity. Renting another user’s Mac is paid compute. Kynd’s creative studio has a 30-day full-feature trial, with continued studio access included in Kynd Pro.
Could my Mac earn £800 or £2,400 a month?
Those are aspirational scenarios, not current average earnings. At the proposed host rate and an assumed two finished video minutes per computing hour, £800 needs 240 paid hours in a 30-day month; £2,400 needs 720. That means eight or 24 paid hours every day respectively, before electricity and personal tax. Lower demand or slower rendering reduces earnings.
Are the M5 Ultra power and speed figures verified?
Apple publishes a 480W maximum continuous power specification for the current Mac Studio. We have not found equivalent measured M5 Ultra idle and workload figures. The M5 Ultra calculator uses editable 300W active and 30W idle assumptions, and does not infer rendering speed from the chip name. Measure your own Mac for a more useful estimate.
Does sharing guarantee a faster music video render?
No. Independent eligible takes can be distributed across available compatible Macs. A continuous lip-synced take stays on one host, and jobs with dependencies still have to wait. Sharing can shorten a batch when the network has suitable capacity; it does not make every individual render faster.
Is community AI automatically greener than a data centre?
No. Existing Macs still use electricity, and efficient data-centre hardware can be very good at particular workloads. Kynd’s goal is to make better use of machines people already own and share the income from that work. We have not established a carbon saving per render.

Checked 8 September 2026. Figures are in GBP. The calculator is a planning tool; current in-app rates and host terms govern real jobs.
- Apple: Mac Studio measured power consumption. M1 Ultra 20/48 cores: 13W idle / 215W maximum; M2 Ultra 24/76: 10W / 295W; M3 Ultra 32/80: 9W / 270W. Max variants use the specific tested configurations listed by Apple. Wall measurements include power-supply losses and exclude external peripherals.
- Apple: Mac mini measured power consumption. M4: 4W idle / 65W max; M4 Pro: 5W / 140W. M1, M2 and M2 Pro use Apple’s CPU-max test figures, which are not GPU-render measurements. Newer mini presets use labelled editable estimates.
- Apple: MacBook environmental reports. Each verified laptop preset links its report through the calculator. Idle references use 230V mains power, a charged battery and the display on. Laptop rendering power is an editable assumption, not an Apple measurement or charger rating. Grouped older models use estimates for both inputs. All Mac types still need a measured rendering speed and at least 16 GB memory.
- Apple: current Mac Studio specifications. The M5 Ultra’s 480W maximum continuous specification is distinct from a measured rendering load. Our M5 input defaults are assumptions.
- Ofgem: electricity unit rates. Default 26.11p/kWh is the July–September 2026 Direct Debit average for Great Britain. Enter your tariff. An existing household standing charge is excluded because hosting does not add it.
- GOV.UK: VAT rates. Proposed UK consumer price £5/minute includes 20% VAT; the remaining revenue is split 40% host / 60% Kynd. Host figures are gross personal income, not take-home pay.
- Default output of 120 finished refined-1080 video seconds per computing hour is an illustrative throughput, not a benchmark for any selected Mac. Paid utilisation is an input, not a prediction. The calculator counts active and waiting power only within the selected daily sharing hours.
